Cheers Bar in Spain

About Us

Jacqui - Owner of the Mermaid Bar and Cheers. 48 years of age, constantly on a diet and trying every wrinkle cream on the market. I took the decision to move to Spain from Great Barr in Birmingham in March 2004. Made the move with my then 13 year old daughter Alexandra (now 18 and speaking fluent Spanish), and my long term lodger of 17 years - Michael, who said he had nothing better to do with his life (and nowhere else to live if I left him behind).
My Mother has owned an apartment out here for years, so I was familiar with the resort, and although I am still not sure what made me decide to make the move to Spain, I have never regretted it for a single moment.
Being an ex landlady in the UK, it was a natural decision for me to buy a bar. Not speaking Spanish, any other type of work would have been impossible in the early days. Michael has always loved to cook, so I though - why not?

Wes = Long suffering boyfriend of Jacqui. Born in Holland, speaks Dutch, obviously, English very well thank God, German and Fench (or so he says!) Loves Old cars, shit music and lots of alcohol. 33 years of age - yes I landed a toy boy and no I'm not his mother!
We have been together now for nearly 3 years and he is a work- aholic, hates dressing up for our party nights, thats why I throw so many of them..!

The Mermaid bar has been open now for 6 years and is doing very well. We bought Cheers Bar December 2007 and have celebrated our second year´s anniversary. We have other businesses from the bar - and we run a property rental agency and a commercial business for sale web site. Links to all web sites can be found on this site.

The Chefs
Michael - well what can be said...known to all his friends as Silve. Came to Spain because he had nothing better to do at the time..! Works as the daytime Chef in the bar - and cooks the best food anywhere! and is infamous for his impression of the Naked Chef - literally ( we have lost many a sensitive customer to this prank - so he is under strict instructions to keep his apron on at all times now). An avid West Bromwich Albion supporter (it just gets worse!), he suffers with bouts of deep depression every week after the match. A source of real entertainment for all our customers, especially in the summer months, when he falls asleep in the bar whenever he gets the chance. Keep him in the kitchen, thats what we say!

Dutch John - Our evening chef. Alias The Penguin..! Fantastic cook, with dishes that will make your mouth water. Loves dressing up, lager, brandy, and vodka and orange (no ice ´cause it gets him pissed!). Devoted owner of Levi the dog. Also loves football and supports Feyenoord - converted to supporting the Albion aswell by Michael (I think a knife to the throat in the kitchen made him see the light!

Alexandra - 18 years of age, Daughter of Jacqui. Sometimes may be seen in the bar demanding money with menaces, helping herself to drinks and then swanning off to the beach.  Hobbies include - lying in bed all day,- stopping up all night,- spending other peoples money,- arguing with her boyfriend Luis, and anybody else for that matter,- and attempting the world record for the untidiest bedroom ever! - This one can sometimes be seen working behind the bar of the Mermaid with Luis- however, work is considered a 4 letter word.

And finally...we present the dogs.

MILLIE - our famous, adorable Shitzu, (thats a dog,
not a stomach complaint by the way). Meet her most evenings

LEVI, her best friend, a handsome Golden Retriever who belongs to John our chef, great entertainment for all, especially the kids!  Always in the bar until 6pm, when he goes home to do the housework.

KIRA - the sweetest American staff cross that ever was - she belongs to Alexandra. Rescued at 4 weeks old when her mother died - Alex has done a wonderful job of raising her. She can often be seen at the bar.

Well thats all of us, apart from the 9 cats at home - I always new I would end up being an animal rescue centre - I really have to start re-homing them. My new years resolution "NO MORE ANIMALS"..

Please drop in and meet us all, we are a friendly bunch and promise to do our best to make your visit as much fun as possible.
